Just Ordered eDRUMin 10 #2!

Post by MisterE »

I just want to say how totally enthused I am about my first eDRUMin. I just ordered a second!

My use case(s):

#1 Home studio use. I have a kit set up that I prefer to keep set up at home and not break down, pack in the car, set up on stage, lug back, and then set it up again just to practice and/or play at home. I use it with SD3 and a Mimic Pro. I love being able to switch between triggering SD3 and/or the Mimic with the home studio kit. All I need is a single MIDI cable to the Mimic. It triggers the Mimic amazingly well; in fact, I get better hi hat control with the Mimic using the eDRUMin to drive it than directly using the hi hat inputs of the Mimic itself. Hard to believe, but that's my user experience FWIW.

#2 Gigging. I have a DIY kit that will only be set up while on stage. When I return home, that kit sits in the corner of the "music room". No need to break down the home studio kit to get it in the car. I'll use the Mimic for gigging.

So, when I get home after a gig, I need just three connections from/to the Mimic - power supply, MIDI, and headphones (or mixer), and I'm up and running in like 5 minutes.

The eDRUMin is so compact in terms of physical footprint and complexity, it almost seems like part of a "snake" from my pads to the MIDI cable to the Mimic. Simple and stealthy. The eDRUMin is mounted low to a cymbal stand; all my TRS drum/cymbal cables are low and out of the way.

I have reported on this forum and on the VDrums Forum how much I love the eDRUMin for the ability to dial in all my pads and cymbals with exquisite control. That's true! It has also simplified my setups and ability to quickly set up between my two kits, allowing me to save time and aggravation in that process. That's something I hadn't expected would be an important benefit, but it is, and it's all made possible because I can leverage that simple 5-in DIN MIDI cable and get excellent triggering results, beyond expectation, from the Mimic. Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for the detailed description of how you're going between playing out and home studio.

I have an E10 all dialed in with an A2E kit in my studio that I don't want to breakdown and transport so I'm looking for a used club kit to do an A2E conversion and use either with my E4 or eventually a second E10. I'm planning on using a laptop with SD3 though because I've developed a way to swap out to a backup quickly.

For keyboard gigs I built a duplicate backup laptop/interface/USB hub rig mounted on an Onstage laptop platform connected to a Gator quick release mount. I set that all up so the standby one could stay in my gig bag in case something happens since my keyboards are controller only. The laptops run Cantabile to host VST's and they sync settings via a DropBox set of folders. It takes about a minute to swap over - just click it onto the stand and plug one USB, power and audio cable in. The laptops boot right into Cantabile with a default drum kit - I don't have to open the laptop. Takes the laptop about 40 seconds to boot and load SD3 sounds.

I'm describing this because I get why you would play out with the Mimic instead of computer/SD3/audio rig - I think there is less that might go wrong.
