Could 25 pin connectors be used somehow? Or maybe even a 40 pin?

An advantage of my black Ludwig shells is the cables blend right in

You are right, it does. My old acoustic set looks like that (Ludwig Accent CS Combo) in black.

Yep, that's exactly the set - a friend gave it to me when he moved.

I'm only getting rid of it because neighbours complained about the volume. It's a good set, especially with Remo Ambassador heads. There was some bubbling on the bass drum, I've read this is caused by prolonged exposure to the sun.
