Also, you might not need your audio interface if you just want headphones out.

The MBP using OSX has very nice audio drivers, and might be on par or very close to your interface.

If you need more outputs, then yes, go with the interface.

Greetings, I seem to have sorted out the mapping issue, but I still have too much latency. The time between my hits and corresponding drum/cymbal sound is too much and therefore unusable. I have tried changing buffer sizes on SD3 settings, but no change. Any advice? Also, which splitters do you recommend? (from which company)?

I decided to standardize on Superior Drummer 3 default notes for each drum/articulation. Sometimes I still bump into situations where the wrong sample is playing. I usually just use the learn function in SD and then save the project so I can get back to that state.

The UFO bass drum trigger plays and triggers extremely well. Here are some things I did to get to that point:
1. Tighten the mesh head of the bass drum
2. I'm using the felt side of the beater and put on a Remo Falam patch
3. I moved the cone around - it ended up above the beater pillow centered between the pillow and the mesh head edge above
4. I adjusted the beater pillow to be a bit more against the head

I advise keeping it simple - stick with the SD3 default kit until you get everything dialed in trigger wise.

Even if you used the built in audio on the MBP you shouldn't have show stopping latency. Make sure nothing (besides SD3) is eating up CPU cycles.

If you have a USB audio interface try that. This is assuming you don't have ALHS :D - I just made that up - Audio Latency Hypersensitive Syndrome!

Seriously, I've had these moments of doubt that I'm compensating for latency and just don't know it. It's made me want to set up a rig to record the audio of the actual drumstick hitting the head and the hit coming through the speakers to see where I'm at with latency. It sounds instant to me using the ASIO driver set to 64.

dsteinschneider-Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I tightened the bd mesh head (a bit bouncy now, but trade-offs are norm) and adjusted the cone a bit, and now the UFO seems to be triggering well. I will have to invest time into tweaking parameters for optimal triggering on all pads/cymbals--I know. BTW, any splitter recommendations? I am eying DrumTec's which are a bit pricey ($32.00 @), but that, too is par for the course. Thanks again!

for the edrumin, any will do: just a Stereo to 2 Mono Cable or a similar adaptar from amazon!

You need the expensive drumtec Splitters for Roland Modules

With a Windows PC you can forget that without an Interface.A Mac seems to be more adapt to handle realtime audio, a Windows Laptop will probably have a 0,50$ Sound Card built in.
Of course I would first try that option and then buy an interface.

I do have ALHS. At a "real" Latency (recorded sound of stick hitting the pad vs. recorded sound from the VST) of about 11ms it all falls apart for me and I recognize a difference.
On the other hand, there is no need in overdoing it, because between 4 ms (Roland or ATV Module) and 8 ms, I can not recognize any difference.

I currently measure about 8ms, which I suppose is about 3ms of the edrumin and the transport of MIDI, around 2,8 ms of Scan Time, and 2,5ms on the Software Side and the way out.
