14" 3-cone snare?

Post by CodaClef »

I currently am on a Roland pd120l 12 snare.
I like the sound of it but would like to move to a 14" snare.
Any recommendations on a 3 cone snare?
HXM and lemon are 1 cone.
ATV? Roland?

I'm not adverse to building one, I recently built a set of octobans and they came out great.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm extremely happy with my ATV ad s-13. That's a 13 inch drum though.

If you already have a donor for a 14" snare, Dave at Diamond Percussion has multiple piezo drop in, or fully built snares.

Rob has the ATV and he likes it.
Dave also has an eDRUMin, so he can tailor the build to the module.

Both great products.

And I would get positional sensing on something like the ATV or the drop in Diamond Percussion piece of kit?

It works on the ATV, but not as good as it does on a drum with a center mounted sensor

Oh really that's interesting, now my mind wanders to an HXM or Lemon 14...

Ii have a 5 snare drums. 2 with 3 cone setups, and 3 with center mounted sensors and i still prefer the ATV. And while I the positional sensing isn't as good the center mounted pads, there are still well defined areas where I can reliability trigger the center and off center sounds and that's all I need.

On my 120l I cross stick directly on the snare, this is different on the ATV right? You have to use the attached block?
Is this because there is no side piezo?

So as this being a part vanity build, I am probably going with a hammered steel 14" snare I found as a doner.

Does the Diamon Percussion drop in have 2 zones so I can get side sticks1?

And Rob, it is a no-no on 3-ply for a snare year? I used 3-ply drumtec on my octobans and they seem fine, but I haven't set up the 2nd zone yet.)

I've been chatting with Dave, and although he has an ED he says he hasn't used it in quite some time and has not tested his setups with it.
He said he thought the ED sent out hot signals and thought his "Less sensitive" balanced plate for the efnote might be the way to go.

Any thoughts on this?
