Erratic positional sensing

Post by Luckymethod »

I noticed that when I turn on positional sensing on my Strike Pro SE snare or toms, positional sensing seems to jump all over the place and doesnt' seem to reliably identify the side vs. the center of the head. Is that to be expected, is there anything I can do to improve the situation?

Yeah, loads of tweaking options.

Firstly, PS only works on centre mounted triggers. 'Dual zone' (head + rim trigger) is irrelevant here; a single centre mounted trigger is all you need for PS. Dual-zone drums do of course work for PS, but be aware the rim information is not used/required (using some sort of waveform analysis voodoo magic).

(nore, the latest beta version allows you to choose whether the tip or ring of your cable jack is being used for PS. I cannot tell you why this exists tbh, maybe a phase switch? but I've also had success leaving it on tip mode)

Try playing with head tension. Tight works well for me.

The eDRUMin positional sensing UI is really confusing, and takes some time to understand.

The top semi-circle shows the _outputted_ position of the head position.

The bar below is the control area to set/tweak it.

Both sides of the green area are movable. The black/green/black areas collerate to where the centre, off-centre and edge areas are on your drum.

My snares (converted acoustic drums) have always required a tiny green bar over to the far right to assign the 3 PS articulations successfully.

So, tap the edge of your drum (fairly hard), and make sure the red indicator is in a black area. Then tap the centre of your drum and make sure the red indicator is in the black area on the other side of the green bar. From there, move to the off-centre position and ensure its in the green area.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have no idea how any of this works at the electronics level, but this specific option has been a godsend for taming the Positional Sensing on my converted Hart Dynamics snare. That’s a snare that uses two cables, one for the head, and one for the rim. I’ve switched the Positional Sensing from tip to ring, and it went from okay but erratic, to rock solid and reliable. I’m not even seeing the “orange box” that the manual talks about. It just works for my particular snare.

I don't believe these pads are compatible with positional sensing.

I suspected so as well. I noticed that it seems like the sensor has 4 cones at the center of the drum if that helps. Another thing I noticed is they have a very pronounced hotspot in the center that the hotspot correction doesn't seem to tame. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with that?

Pretty sure hot spot suppression also relies on a single centre-mounted trigger cone.

Ok, that how I did it.
But today I noticed , that I do not get a 127 even though the indidicator is on the left side of the green bar.

And I get CC values between 1-63 what shouldn't be the case following the video or manual.

Did I miss something?

I updated to the latest version 2.2.0.8.

That's an old post you've quoted! I presume your current PS issue is beta firmware related...

Might be worth downgrading and checking.
