Edrumin 4 as an add-on to my module

Post by RickVstx »

I searched the forums and did not find this addressed anywhere else. Hopefully I didn't just miss the thread.

I use a DDrum DD5XM module sending MIDI to a Scarlett focusrite audio interface, and I'm triggering sounds from superior drummer 3. My drum triggers are jobeky triggers, which work great with my module. And I'm using magnatrack triggers for my cymbals, which work great as well. The only problem is that my magnatrack hi hat controller is not compatible with my module.

I watched a short intro to edrumin video on YouTube, and the content creator of that particular channel noted that the edrumin can be used to expand your module with pads or triggers that are not compatible with your module. Magnatrack customer support has confirmed that their hi hat controller will work with edrumin products. Can anyone share their thoughts on how I can do that in this application? Is this simply via USB? Thanks for any feedback / guidance.

I did the same, but using a DTX700 module.

Since your module has MIDI in, the easiest would be to connect the eDRUMin to the MIDI in of your module. Make sure you have MIDI passthru set up to send all your pads from module and eDRUMin to your Scarlet interface triggering SD.

If finding a MIDI cable problematic (less and less available these days), then just eDRUMin USB to computer, and select the two MIDI devices, your module and the eDRUMin, in SD.

Thanks for the advice. In your experience, going the MIDI in to the module route, the edrumin software is still used to adjust the trigger parameters correct?

Yes, be aware though (as you set up your pads) eDRUMin xtalk only works for pads attached to eDRUMin and MIDI into eDRUMin. So if you have four pads attached to an ED4 the eDRUMin will do xtalk (which is excellent by the way) between those four pads. There is no xtalk controls between the module attached pads and eDRUMin attached pads.

Thanks so much for the insight. At present, I would only be using the edrumin for my hi hat controller. But as I expand the kit and begin using the other inputs, I'll keep that in mind. Have you had those edrumin - module xtalk issues? If so, how have you managed them?

Yes, I’ve had xtalk issues but they can be managed. First, plan for it up front. For example all of the pads on the same rack should be on the same controller, so the module or eDRUMin. Don’t have a crash 1 pad on the module and Tom 1 on the eDRUMin if they share a rack structure. If there is no way to set up your kit to avoid these issues just beware the xtalk control on the module won’t really help. Modules don’t use MIDI In for xtalk. The eDRUMin 10 will perform xtalk cancellation on MIDI In. That is what I have used very successfully. So in the case of the module raising the threshold above the xtalk is a technique I have used at the expense of losing soft note playability. So I usually did that on crash cymbals.

Thank you for the tips. The idea of changing the threshold on the cymbals makes a lot of sense. I ordered my edrumin 4 today. Hopefully it all works out.
