I am wondering in what cases one might use the MIDI ports included MIDI Expression IO?

The main reason you'd get an iO is for standalone operation (without connecting to a computer). Another reason is if you want an easy way to dynamically transform MIDI messages from a keyboard or other MIDI device that's plugged into the MIDI In port. For example, you could use an expression pedal to set MIDI channel of messages coming from your keyboard, allowing you to access different sounds on a multi-timbral instrument.
