MIDI expression i/o compatibility with usb controller

Hi.
Great product and website.
I have a USB midi controller that connects to my laptop (Windows, running reaper). It is a six channel monophonic controller, each channel carrying different "parts" at any one time (channel 1-6).
I am wondering if I can use the "MIDI expression I/O" to connect two sustain pedals and one expression pedal to my DAW in order to control the routing of the six different midi channels to a vst.
Specifically, I would like to use the pedal(s) to select which of the controller channels (1-6) plays through a VST at any one time. i.e in a "live" situation.
This looks possible from the "Global channel tutorial" but in my case there are two distinct differences in the set up:
1) My midi controller is USB into the DAW (you are using a 5 pin input from a controller keyboard into the DAW)
also
2) I require to send the MIDI data from the USB controller (all six channels) to another midi hardware device (drum synth) at the same time via my DAW midi out port.
Would "Midi Expression i/o" allow MIDI thru or would I even need to use the MIDI ports at all on the "MIDI expression I/O" for the above scenario?
Thanks for any information.
