Control Application

Post by calaf5 »

I've installed the Control Application. When I open it (standalone) I get a window that says "Plug-in MIDI Expression" in big white letters. I can see the control application behind the letters but it does not allow me to click on anything or do anything. I've made sure that MIDI Expression is plugged in via USB to my computer (Windows 7 64 bit) and it is also connected to my Moog Foot pedal. Why is it not recognizing it?

Not exactly sure what's going on, but it could be a firmware issue. Is the internal led flashing? Try updating the firmware using the package in the following link. Let me know if that takes care of the issue.

There is no internal led flashing. I tried updating the firmware. A window pops up and tells me to push button to activate. I tried clicking the button with my mouse. Nothing happens. Am I supposed to open up the device and physically push a button?

While there is a button on the inside of the device, you shouldn't ever need to push it. I suspect the problem is something else--I suspect the cable. Are you using the supplied USB cable? Do you have any other cables to test with?

I am using the supplied USB cable. I have no other cables that size to test with.

The Teensy application window also says "GREEN.hex, 39% used" (besides saying "push button to activate") When I click "finish" on the set up window the Teensy application window changes and says "GREEN.hex (unreadable)"

Can we check to see if the OS is recognizing the device at all? Open up the Device Manager and see if the number of "USB Input Devices" changes when you plug and unplug the MIDI Expression. If Windows is seeing it, the number of USB Input Devices should go up.

The number of USB devices remains the same when I plug and unplug the MIDI Expression.

Hi Jonathan,

Because Windows is not seeing the device at all, there are a couple possible reasons.

1. The USB cable is defective.
2. The internal reset button is being pinched by a wire.
3. The circuit board is dead.

I don't test the USB cables, so it's possible that the cable is defective. It would be great if you could find another cable to test with. A lot of small hardware produced over the last decade use mini-b cables, so there's a good chance you might have one lying around somewhere. I test every device before it goes out, so it's quite unlikely that the circuit board is dead.

If you would like, you can just send the works back to me as cheaply as possible (shouldn't cost more than $10) and I can send you a replacement or give you a refund.

If you would like, you can investigate the possibility that the reset button is being pinched by a wire. I can send you instructions about how to open the unit and check. If you go this route, you can still always return the unit for a refund or replacement.

Regards,
Rob

I searched everywhere for a USB cable that would fit. They are all too thin. Finally I remembered an old camera in a drawer. The cable fit! It now recognizes the device.

But I'm not out of the woods just yet. When I push my Moog expression pedal up and down nothing happens on screen in the control application. Shouldn't I be seeing the pedal move on screen? It is just staying at zero. I have it set to "sense" and it looks like the first box is highlighted for expression pedal. Am I doing something wrong?

Once I pressed calibrate the pedal image began going up and down on screen when I moved my foot. The problem is I hear no change in the sound. How do I get my DAW to recognize it? I am using the latest version of Sonar Professional and Vienna Ensemble.
