Quattro with multible controllers

Post by jrg »

Hello.

Can the Quattro send out MIDI CC's that you can specify somewhere with the application that lets you set those?
I want to be able to hook up and control sustain with a sustain pedal, volume with a Boss EV-5, and use a latch switch for hold control.

Thanks, Jim

Yes, you absolutely can. All four inputs are independent can be used and configured independently.

If I use two separate keyboard controllers, which do not have volume control pedal inputs; If I set them to two different MIDI channels controlling virtual instruments (one keyboard controlling a string patch on channel 1 and the other controlling an organ module on channel 2), can I use the Quattro expression and plug two volume pedals into it and control the volumes for the two distinct virtual sound modules set to two different MIDI channels on my laptop PC. Or would I need to purchase two of the single units in two different colors? These volume pedals will have to be set to the same MIDI control code 11. Will each pedal be able to control the two separate sound modules, independently?

The answer to your question is almost certainly yes. Most hosts will allow you to filter the MIDI going to an instrument. So for example, you could filter everything except channel 1 and send that to the first instrument. Similarly, you could filter everything except channel 2 and send that to a second instrument. Another solution would be to to setup the Quattro as a MIDI Controller and then use host automation. If you tell me which host you plan to use, I could give you a better a better idea as to how you would need to set things up.

I took a look at their website and it looks like very interesting software; I'll have to play around with that myself. BTW, I can't see any reason why there would be any issues using a MIDI Expression with their software.

Rob,
Thanks so much for your speedy response to my inquiry. I have been using the VST host software, Cantabile, for my virtual software instruments for several years with two M-Audio keyboard controllers. So I'm aware of how MIDI keyboard controllers work with virtual instruments set to separate MIDI channels. Both of these controllers have volume pedal inputs. If I have several virtual instruments loaded in Cantabile on separate MIDI channels, when I switch the MIDI channel on My 88 note controller or 61 note controller, the volume pedal plugged into each keyboard controller obviously affects the volume of the virtual instrument of the selected MIDI channel.
I am considering replacing the two M-Audio controllers with new Nektar Impact LX88 controllers. These controllers do not have volume pedal inputs. But I need volume control for both of these keyboards for my virtual instruments. So, which of the two types of controllers that you sell would work best for me? I would prefer to have a single unit like the Quattro. But it seems your single controllers are different colors and there is something distinctly different about the electronics in the different colors. So, does it matter which of your controller models I purchase to meet my requirements? I basically want the two volume pedals to function in the same way as they do for my current setup. And, do you have a return policy if these do not satisfy my requirements?
Thanks,
Ted

Of course when you change the MIDI channel of your keyboard, that's not going to change the channel of the MIDI Expression--something to think about.

The electronics in the different colors of devices are identical. The only difference is in regards to the MIDI port names. A blue device has a MIDI port called MIDI Expression BLUE, for example. So if you had two single input MIDI Expressions, routing might be a bit easier as you'd have two separate MIDI Inputs to work with as opposed to only one for the Quattro. Perhaps in the future, I could implement two MIDI ports per Quattro and let the user freely change which input gets routed to which output.

Absolutely. On the website, I advertise a one month return policy. If you make a purchase and you're not satisfied, you can simply return it.
