standard midi output

Post by pocoapoco »

Is it possible to get one of these midi expression units to ouput directly to a standard midi din-5 male output rather than the USB?

No, it's not possible at the moment. But, perhaps in a future incarnation. Even if I included a MIDI out port, the device would still need to be tethered to a USB port to supply power. You are looking to be able to patch a pedal into a hardware synth or something?

Actually my situation is that I'm just a hobbyist/performer. I currently have a Kawai VPC-1. The problem with it is that the input for the sustain pedal has a terrible adc. Especially near the bottom of the travel, but still significantly throughout the range, the conroller value jumps by as much as 20 midi values with no possibility of getting in between values. This makes it quite impossible to perform any decent half pedaling. I've even replaced the potentiometer in the pedal with a high quality/long life unit and it makes no difference. So the fault is definitely in the instrument.
The other consideration is that the piano patch that I use is very CPU intensive and I'm sometimes maxing out the polyphony and getting terrible dropped notes. I'm looking for a solution which won't take any additional CPU power with the added overhead of an additional program running to interpret the pedal input. I thought if your adapter could ouput directly to a din-5 then I could place it inbetween the pedal and midi in jack on the piano which can be set to merge with the ouput jack.

For what it's worth, MIDI Expression has a micro-controller that does all the work. The Control Application is just for editing its internal presets and doesn't need to be running for the device to work, so you can be sure that you wouldn't be taxing your CPU.
