Using 2 MIDI Expression dongles at the same time

Post by Laidback »

I just received my 2nd MIDI Expression dongle so it looks like Christmas underneath my keyboards :D
I just answered my original question doing a little extra working after starting to write this post. While I can use two dongles at once and thus, 2 different types of pedals (sustain, volume) I can load and set parameters for the pedals only one at a time. To be more clear, the app itself can only give visual feedback for one device at a time even though the computer responds to both pedals based on whatever midi channel/parameter I most recently set them up for. Obviously this slows things down in a live situation if you need to make parameter changes for what each pedal does since currently only the last set-up in the app for each device is what the computer recalls.
Are there any plans to make the software save patches for set-ups so I could, for instance, call up a patch that remembers that my sustain pedal functions in dual cc mode on Midi channel 4 and my volume pedal functions as a filter cutoff parameter in midi channel 3 and the next patch would have totally different midi channels and parameters for different soft synth patches as called up by loading a new file in my DAW? I am just looking for a lot more versatility and flexibility from my pedals with a quick patch/file change.

I'm working on making the control application a VST/AU plugin such that settings for MIDI Expression(s) could be saved on a per project basis. Sorry no timeline available. As you are using multiple devices, you may or may not have stumbled upon the issue of both devices having the same MIDI port name. A fix is in the works and I'll update the firmware shortly.

Thanks Rob,
Thanks for the quick reply and I will be waiting patiently for the AU/VST plug-in upgrade and preset storage capabilities. I think that ability would really help sales of the hardware :D

I will just limit myself to a single midi channel for both MIDI Expression devices for now and consistently use that channel for any software instrument that needs those pedals in every song file I setup for live performance. There are workarounds and hopefully midi learn on parameters in 3rd party AU plug-in instruments in Logic Pro X will allow the volume pedal to affect different parameters (filter cutoff, delay length, etc.) even though set for a different CC in the MIDI Expression app. Sometimes being limited makes me come up with interesting work arounds that foster creativity from a different angle in my compositions and I already found a new one this morning.

Thanks again!

Laidback,

I'll have a BETA version of a VST (Win 32 / 64) version of the control application ready by next week. When in plugin mode, settings are stored in the plugin as opposed to the device itself allowing you to save configurations for the device on a per project basis. Let me know if you're interested if helping with testing.

Rob
