I just got home early. I tried using MIDI Wrench with the FC-7 connected straight to the ipad (no usb hub). The results are the same. Even when connected directly there is no response from MIDI Wrench. I also have a Roland DP-10 pedal and it didn't respond either when testing continuous sustain. However the app does detect that MIDI Expression Black is connected it just doesn't send any data at all from what I can see. After testing all this, could it be my MIDI Expression is defective?

It's unlikely that the device is defective as I test every unit, but it's not impossible. Do you have a PC or MAC to test with? If you can install and run the control application, you'll be able to see exactly what's going on.

I just finished testing the MIDI Expression/both pedals with the PC editor a few minutes ago. The results have been the same as with the ipad. I connected the USB cable from my PC to the MIDI Expression and then to each pedal taking turns. I started with the FC-7 and had no response when trying for expression. I pressed the calibrate button and tried to calibrate the pedal but it didn't react to any change. I tested each of the 4 modes in the editor, plus sense and calibrate buttons trying to get some sort of response but had no luck. I then tried the Roland DP-10 in continuous pedal mode. Same thing happened. No response from it either. I tested the default CC64 first and I manually changed to CC7 thinking it may help but it didn't work. I know for a fact the DP-10 works because I use it in switch mode with my digital piano daily, just in case that helps. Any other recommendations or tests you think I should do? I'm still not sure if the MIDI Expression is defective because the PC detected it as well, but with no response from the editor either it could be possible. Thank you for all the help up to now and for your patience. I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for taking the time to do a thorough test. Looks like that unit does indeed have issues. I think it's extremely unlikely to make any difference, but do you have another USB cable to test with?

Also, when you plug in a pedal does the Control Application detect that it's plugged in? For example, the pic below shows that an expression pedal is plugged into input 3.

Assuming your device is indeed defective, I'll rush a replacement out to you ASAP.

I tried changing the USB cable. It didn't do anything either.

Regarding detection, the editor does indeed detect there is something connected to it but it doesn't really detect what. When I connected the expression pedal the editor still gave me the choice of what kind of pedal I wanted to use. It didn't automatically choose "expression pedal" for me. I think that is probably the beginning of the problem itself.

I really appreciate you sending another unit to me. Just to make sure it works, could you test it with the editor before sending it to me? I would feel bad if the replacement had problems as well and I had to return it. And speaking of returning, let me know how to send the MIDI Expression I have back to you.

Rob,

I just wanted to give a small update on the situation. When I opened the MIDI Expressions yesterday to check the wiring, the black wire was loose and not connected to anything. Everything else regarding electronics was fine. I will try to solder it (I have no experience but there is a first time for everything) hoping it will not be too complicated and following your instructions. Hopefully it will work. I'll send you pictures via email if it works.
