FL Studio and MIDI Expression, do they work well together?

Post by sdh »

Hey everybody,

New here, was hoping I could get an answer to a few questions before buying since FL Studio tends to treat midi in a different way than some other DAWs plus want to make sure there will be no conflicts..

I am using a windows 8 computer and I use FL Studio v12.2

I use a Nektar Impact LX61 usb keyboard controller.

I use a Lexicon Alpha ad/da interface.

I will be adding a midi in to go from my GR33 guitar synth midi out to the computer and DAW so I can control synths and stuff in the DAW from my guitar as soon as I find what midi in/usb box is best to use (would be happy on recommendations for that but right now am focusing on getting a pedal to work).

So, that's the rig ...

1) I need to know the MIDI Expression is simple to use, I don't want to play around with setting midi channels and playing with what ports to use etc, etc.

2) I wanted to make sure the MIDI Expression would not have any conflicts and would work with FL Studio. Some of the setup with FL Studio treats midi different from other DAWs and so if anyone knows for certain if parameters in FL's included instruments and effects AND parameters in aftermarket VSTs that I have added will be controllable with my pedal through the MIDI Expression. One aftermarket thing for example that I'd like to control is the WahWah in the VST "Green Machine" which is an amp and fx VST but would like to also control various filters in stuff that came with FL Studio.

3) The 3 expression pedals I have are a Moog (not sure what model number), a Roland EV-5 and a Rolls RFX 402P Stereo vol/pan/cv pedal, would any or all of those work with the MIDI Expression ?

And sorry the long post but along with knowing it works, I need something simple. My keyboard is great for that, all I need do is click an onscreen knob, slider or button and then move a physical knob, slider or button on the keyboard and bingo it immediately is assigned and working, no fiddling necessary, no setting ports, etc, etc, it just right away is set. That's what I'm hoping you'll say MIDI Expression does that or would be pretty quick and easy. I want to play and record, not program.

Thanks very much for your time.

Peace

Hi,

First, I will say that MIDI Expression devices are much like any other MIDI controllers and you can map your pedals to parameters in FL in the exact same way i.e. no need to do any programming.

Secondly, because the MIDI Expression uses your OS's built in class compliant drivers, there should be no conflict in that regard.

Thirdly, all those pedals you mentioned will work just fine.

Lastly, if you're willing to wait another month, I'll be releasing a new product that will allow you to kill two birds with one stone such that you only need to purchase one piece of hardware. I'm not prepared to elaborate more on that at the moment.

Regards,
Rob

Awesome! :-) Not in a huge rush as I have to redo some of the physical patch bays and decide my switching setup for pedals, restring, set intonation and check action on a couple guitars, set up the folders for favorites of vst instruments and fx, set up a few projects preloaded with a good selection of stuff I may use for that type of sound etc so will be ready when you are! I'll check back and if you have a newsletter I'll be glad to sign up for it.

Thanks man.

Peace,
Steve
