instead of using drum triggers, can i use the audio output of a mic into dsp trigger?

i'm wanting to trigger samples live from a close-miked drum, with the mic plugged into my computer audio interface.

in principle, if i get the gain and thresholds set up properly, could a mic work?

Absolutely. There is an input type called 'microphone' for just that purpose.
